Day 1 of tour - tour of Johannesburg

I never thought I would have lunch in Soweto!

Today's tour od Johannesburg began with a tour of this famous township.  Some of the people are living in shacks, but there are some middle class and upper class residents.

We had lunch in the township, and we were treated to Zulu dancing as we exited the restaurant.

We visited the Hector Peterson museum, named for the twelve year old who was the first casualty of the uprising when hundreds of children were killed by South African police during a peaceful demonstration.  The museum helped us understand this crucial event in apartheid history.

We spent several hours in the afternoon revisiting the apartheid Museum.  We are glad that we had plenty of time to obsorb all of the content of the text dense museum.  The layout was often confusing but the content was valuable.
