We took a cab to the Apartheid Museum which is part of a huge casino/amusement park campus in south Johannesburg. Our formal tour will include two hours here on Saturday, but we like to read all the fine print in places like this, so we decided to spend time here on our own. After over two hours, we were barely half way through the man in display space. The museum gave us a good foundational understanding of the factors leading up to such a drastic, dramatic, almost inconceivable social/political environment. It has only been ten years since apartheid was repealed and South Africa has experienced tremendous growth, although problems still do exist. It will be very interesting to see how our tour guide will present the issues to us.
Our brother-in-law Marty has a business associate whose brother is a life long resident od Johannesburg.
Joel and his wife Adele have been generous with their time advising us on activities and accompanying us as we see the city.
Joel picked us up at the museum and gave us a driving tour of the city. He and Adele took us to a Portugese restaurant for dinner. We have. Of had a bad meal in Johannesburg, but this was by far the best. Restaurant prices here are easily half of wht they are back home.
Our jet lag is very manageable. One more good night's sleep and we should be fine.
